What a fabulous fitted French Etui sewing set from the Napoleon III Era!
It features all original 18k gold vermeil implements, which feature a beautiful embossed floral design.
The case is finely hand crafted with each implement having its owned carved slot for an oh so perfect fit!
Tools are original and appear to all match; although the set contains a plain bodkin it is not uncommon that a plain bodkin be found with a decorative set. It too fits perfectly, therefore indicates it is likely original to the set as well.
Each piece is in excellent condition with little to no signs of wear.
It’s not every day that one of these antique sewing sets are found still fully functional and without any damage!
The tools are made of vermeil, which means they are contructed of silver covered with a thick layer of 18k gold.
In essence, each implement has the look of being 18k gold, with a “gold wash” finish, yet has the sturdiness and durability of silver often referred to as “continental.” The guarantee or lozenge mark appears to be that of two boar's heads; an indication the set is marked for Paris.
This particular mark was used from 1838-1962 and guarantees a minimum fineness or purity of .800 silver. The .800/1000 is more often used in sewing and small vanity items, as it is stronger and less prone to bending or damage.
The actual maker is unknown as the lozenge mark is difficult to decipher but the mark is indeed on more than one of the tools nevertheless.
The "faux" ivory case is in superb condition with no cracks or chips.
The case/casket’s hinges and closure are in perfect working condition.
The outer case features a gorgeous blue intricate letter or initial which is likely that of the original owner.
A sewing etui such as this is rare and hard to come by especially one of its age that is in near perfect condition.
